Soft Surroundings Mittens are knitted from the cuff up, making thumb gusset increases at one side of the mitten. The thumb is worked last, after the body of the mitten is finished. The zigzag pattern using an Estonian Inlay Knitting Technique (‘roosimine’) is worked on the back of the hand on the go while knitting the body of the mitten.

Finished measurements
Hand circumference: 18.5 (20; 21.5) cm [7.25 (7.75; 8.5) inches], blocked, without stretching. Length adjustable. The mittens are intended to be worn with approximately 0 – 2 cm / 0 – 0.75 inches of negative ease.
Yarn
Approximately 150 – 210 meters /165 – 230 yards or 40 – 60 grams of fingering weight yarn, and 150 –
210 meters / 165 – 230 yards or 25 – 35 grams of lace weight yarn held together or a single strand of suitable yarn that gives you the correct gauge for the body. Approximately 4 – 5 meters / 4 – 5 yards or a few grams of fingering weight yarn per each zigzag pattern. Sample mittens are knit in laurelknits KiMo Sock in colorway Naturelle (55% Superwash Merino, 20% Kid Mohair, 25% Nylon) and Udu in colorway Naturelle (75% Brushed Suri Alpaca, 25% Silk; 300 meters / 328 yards per 50g) held together.
The zigzag patterns on the back of mitten are made using yarnbylaurelknits SuperSock held double in colorways Speckled Teddy (CC1), Iiris (CC2) and Common Sense (CC3) (85% SW Merino, 15% Nylon; 400 meters / 440 yards per 100g). Only a few grams of each CC is needed.
Needles
3.5 mm / US 4 circular needle, length at least 80 cm / 32 inch for using the Magic Loop Technique or size needed to obtain gauge. Optional: DPNs in the same size if preferred for the thumb.
